Uganda: UK & UGANDA | Volunteer Finance Manager for Social Change Research Org. | 6-11 Weeks | Sept-Oct

Organization: Accounting for International Development
Country: Uganda, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Closing date: 17 Oct 2014

Our partner was founded on the values of research in order to improve the social impact of government, charity and social enterprise initiatives. Through rigorous research and field experiments they aim to assist organisations within civil society in measuring their impact and focusing on how to improve and increase that impact. In addition to impact assessment, they offer other advisory services – including programme design consulting, monitoring and evaluation, technical advice and scale-up support. They have offices in the US, India, Rwanda and Uganda. In Uganda, they are evaluating the impact of owning a home solar panel with lights, a radio, and cell phone charging capabilities among rural households in Eastern Uganda. They are also conducting a process evaluation on an innovative educational initiative to help empower and connect teachers throughout the country to help them improve their efficiency.

You will be the second volunteer on assignment with our partner, our previous volunteer supported them for 5-6 weeks late in 2013. Their role was to help set up appropriate accounting processes and financial controls, and train the Senior Manager of the Ugandan office, in maintaining records, and creating and managing budgets and reports.

The Finance Manager has recently left the organisation, which has created a gap in the financial management, especially with the reporting. As their previous FM was covering all elements of the accounting, our partner has requested a volunteer to: assist in the development of necessary procedures and systems to allow accurate monthly financial reporting, as well as financial projections at a country and organsiational level; and assist in setting up a system to measure and report on the profitability of each project and time utilisation of staff members.

It is worth noting that our partner is an unusual organisation in that it does not directly work with beneficiaries, but rather with with governments, charities and social enterprises to identify techniques through which their efforts will go further. The founders were awarded an Echoing Green Fellowship in 2012, and they have gone from strength to strength since the initial AfID placement.

The office is located inside a compound in Kampala where your accommodation will be provided for free and whilst ideally this role would last between 6 and 11 weeks, for the right candidate – i.e. one with broad accounting skills and commercial experience – they would be willing to consider a 5 week placement.
