POSITION:SGBV Senior Advisor
LOCATION:Brussels with travel to Turkey.
OVERALL DESCRIPTION:
The Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA) is an international organization working under the umbrella of the Tsamota Groups, which consists of multidisciplinary teams, including lawyers, analysts and specialists staff conducting investigations of war crimes and crimes against humanity working mostly in hostile environments.
Under the supervision of the project manager, the SGBV Senior Advisor is responsible for the organization, coordination and management of activities of a team of analysts and researchers focusing on sexual violence in Syria and the current conflict. The advisor will be required to contribute evidential material to on-going investigations in the field of international criminal law. In particular, the expert will be required to implement the specific objectives in this field as agreed with a key donor to the project.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As the SGBV Senior Advisor, the incumbent will perform the following tasks, under the supervision of the project manager:
- Provide technical support by ensuring that appropriate attention is given to human rights violations and the gendered dimensions of human rights and international humanitarian law violations in the context of sexual violence in a conflict zone;
- Ensure proper documentation and if required investigation of human rights violations and the gendered impacts of human rights and international humanitarian law violations by international justice mechanisms in the context of sexual violence in a conflict zone.
- Ensure proper research and collection of information pertaining to sexual and gender-based violence;
- Oversee the analyzing of existing documentation and propose gender-sensitive investigation methods according to the mandate of the international mechanisms;
- Conduct and/or assist in the conduct of interviews and evidence gathering activities;
- Provide advice, awareness-raising, and ensuring that all SGBV Team members and investigators are aware of how to identify documentation and investigation of human rights violations including SGBV and the gendered impacts of human rights and international humanitarian law violations, that security arrangements are gender-sensitive, that cultural and contextual gender considerations are considered;
- Ensure that the necessary measures of protection and confidentiality for witnesses and victims of abuses are implemented;
- Supervision of a junior analyst and up to 4 researchers;
- Perform other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressive responsibility experience in human rights and / or war crimes investigation and monitoring with a focus on SGBV;
Education:
- Advanced study in law, political sciences, gender studies or other disciplines related to human rights and / or war crimes investigations or significant experience in lieu of academic qualifications.
Required
- Advanced computer skills;
- Ability to work effectively and constructively in teams;
- Ability to work under stressful conditions;
- Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality and security;
- Ability to provide leadership and development to junior colleagues.
Languages:
- English is the working language of the organization. Fluency or knowledge of Arabic will be an asset.
