Switzerland: Internship/Traineeship Offer – UNITAR - Resilience and Risk Reduction

Overview: The Research Department is working with several UNITAR programmes to develop new activities in the area of Resilience and Risk Reduction. Under the supervision of the Director of Research, Technology Applications and Knowledge Systems, the incumbent will be part of the team and entrusted with research on resilience, risk reduction and capacity development for disaster reduction and preparedness.

Responsibilities:

The intern’s responsibilities will include individual research tasks and generic support to the activities and projects of the Department of Research:

  1. Conduct research on satellite earth observation technology for disaster risk reduction;
  2. Participate in research on training and e-learning for resilience and risk reduction;
  3. Provide assistance to the team in charge of delivering e-learning and tutorials on-line on the UNITAR Moodle platform;
  4. Participate in the various activities of the Department relating to the area of resilience and risk reduction.

Specific terms of reference (ToRs) will be established in accordance with ongoing projects implemented by the department. ToRs will also include learning outcomes of the internship/traineeship and measurable outputs.

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates should be enrolled in a degree programme in a under-graduate or post-graduate school, or possess a university-level qualification (undergraduate or higher) in the area of international relations, environment, disaster management, political science, or related subjects. Please note that the status of intern is granted to candidates still enrolled in a university programme, while candidates having completed their education are considered as trainees.

Candidates should have: strong analytical and research skills; some knowledge of the United Nations; ability to write in a clear and concise manner; average computer skills and a high level of individual responsibility, commitment, creativity and sense of initiative. Familiarity with geospatial information technologies is an advantage. Excellent knowledge of both written and oral English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Dates and duration:4 to 6 months, starting in October 2014. The internship/traineeship programme is normally on a full-time basis and interns/trainees are expected to be present in the office five days a week. Requests for part-time arrangements may be considered if agreed before the start of the internship/traineeship.

Duty station: Geneva, Switzerland.
