United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Disaster Emergency Preparedness Programme Portfolio Manager- Start Network

Organization: Save the Children UK
Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Closing date: 02 Nov 2014

About the Start Network

The Start Network is a consortium of 19 leading humanitarian NGOs which collaborate because the change that is demanded of contemporary humanitarian organisations cannot be achieved by NGOs working alone. The Start Network is now understood as a platform for collaboration in three areas:

  • Start Fund (new business models and financial mechanisms for crisis response by NGOs);
  • Start Build (decentralised capacity strengthening); where this role will sit;
  • Start Beta (evidence, enquiry, experimentation and learning).

Currently incubated and hosted by Save the Children, the Start Network will be a new type of organisation, with a lean central team and dispersed capacity embedded within the membership. The central team is responsible for managing, coordinating, facilitating, supporting, enabling and, when necessary, providing leadership for and on behalf of the Consortium.

About the role

With the securing of a grant worth up to £26m from DFID under their Disasters Emergency Preparedness Programme (DEPP) the Start Network is seeking a DEPP Portfolio Manager, to be currently based in Save the Children UK offices in Farringdon.

About you

The Network requires an outstanding individual who can balance operational delivery and the nuts and bolts of implementation with non-traditional approaches to networked thinking and collaboration. As well as routine tasks such as reporting, donor liaison and paperwork, the post holder will need to take oversight of the Start Network’s large and complex portfolio of capacity building projects. As a member of the multi-stakeholder DEPP Management Team, the post holder will need to be a natural communicator and team player, who will be able to work across departmental and organisational boundaries whilst using evidence based arguments to challenge and change policy, practice and thinking around capacity building in the sector. The post holder will also need the patience and tenacity required to both produce a single line of programme information, data and analysis from Save the Children (as the lead agency) to DFID (as the donor), as well as back to Start Network DEPP programme leads to close feedback loops.

About the recruitment process

We will invite the shortlisted candidates to take a test and for a first phone interview ideally on the week of the 3rd of November. If successful, candidates will be invited to work on a project to be presented during a second face to face interview.

What we offer in return

The position is a three years fixed term contract within a very vibrant and exciting team of highly skilled professionals. The salary package is competitive plus pension, with an opportunity to work with many stakeholders across the world.
