Save the Children works globally in 120 countries for children. Our mission has three central elements, saving children from illness, educating children and protecting children from harm. In June 2013 Save the Children joined forces with Merlin to create a world-class humanitarian health and nutrition force for children and their families living in some of the toughest places in the world. The humanitarian technical unit (HTU) at Save the Children is composed of technical experts across seven sectors; the nutrition sector is a key component to our humanitarian emergencies work.

Save the Children’s humanitarian nutrition activities include surveillance, rapid assessments and in depth surveys as well as response options including Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E), Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM), micronutrient supplementation, nutrition education and blanket supplementary feeding. Nutrition outcomes are also sought from emergency food security programmes.

About the Role:

As Senior Humanitarian Nutrition Adviser you will report to the Deputy Head of the HTU and manage a team of nutrition advisers and emergency response personnel. As lead of the HTU Nutrition sector you will manage and develop the humanitarian nutrition programmes and work towards achieving the Health and Nutrition strategy and beyond. To do this you will ensure high quality, timely and accountable responses are delivered. The post holder will be ambitious and motivated to drive policy and research in the nutrition field.

Your responsibilities will include:

– Managing the HTU nutrition team work plan and nutrition staff performance.
– Managing and being accountable for the nutrition sector budget.
– Representing Save the Children on external organisation bodies such as the Nutrition cluster.
– Working collaboratively in the International Emergency Nutrition Technical Working Group.
– Conducting, guiding and initiating assessments and designing programmes in humanitarian contexts.
– Leading the development of an operational research agenda in nutrition to build on existing Save the Children strengths to inform practice.
– Whilst upholding Save the Children’s values and complying with child protection policies.

About you

You will have significant experience and track record of success in delivering and managing high quality humanitarian nutrition programmes. You have sound and current technical expertise on humanitarian nutrition response practices. You have demonstrated your ability in making informed decisions, using initiative and maintaining excellent (written and verbal) communication skills in challenging contexts, and you have delivered high quality humanitarian programmes. You possess strong interpersonal skills and have a record of being an excellent manager. Flexible, you are willing to travel at short notice, and at times in remote insecure locations. Ideally, you speak another language such as French, Spanish or Arabic. You will bring a positive and you will bring a positive and proactive attitude to the organisation and uphold the Save the Children values and principles.
