Denmark: Financial Controller

We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller for our MENA Department to work closely with our partners in the Middle East and North Africa on ensuring financial and administrative capacity and compliance with donor requirements.

International Media Support (IMS) is a non-profit international organisation working to support journalists and media in countries affected by armed conflict, human insecurity and political transition. We work with partners in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and elsewhere in the MENA region to further safety and media reform; institution building and development of professional and diverse media content.

Responsibilities

  • Assess financial management capacity and systems of partners;
  • Support and train partners on setting up systems and procedures that comply with international standards;
  • Secure adequate financial management of activities in conflict and other challenging circumstances;
  • Control financial accounts and external audited reports from partners and plan and take action on areas of improvement if required;
  • Handle administrative and financial tasks in relation to our programme in Syria and others
  • Prepare accounts and control documentation for external audits:
  • Elaborate and follow up on partner and consultant contracts;
  • Support compilation of financial and narrative report for donors;
  • Elaboration and budgeting of programme proposals;
  • Travel to programme countries to conduct internal controls; assessments; training and/or support to partners.

Qualifications

  • Relevant educational background, e.g. an MSc in Economics and Business Administration, an MSc in Advanced Economics and Finance, a Graduate Diploma in accounting or equivalent qualifications within fields of economics, business administration, accounting or auditing;
  • Solid knowledge of and experience with administration and financial control procedures in relation to project and programme administration, preferably from work with civil society or media organisations and with international donors;
  • Knowledge of international auditing standards;
  • Experience from working with international donors, compiling financial and narrative reports and adhering to donor guidelines;
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant working experience;
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Office, in particular Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of accounting systems such as Quickbooks, Microsoft Dynamics NAV or similar is an asset;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English at a business level;
  • Fluency in spoken Arabic will be considered an asset.

IMS provides a fast-paced, international work environment with colleagues and partners in and from many corners of the world. Our working language is English. As a Financial Controller in the MENA department you will be part of a group of approximately 20 committed colleagues. You will be working closely with both Programme Managers in charge of countries and/or thematic regional components of our MENA programme and IMS’ Administration and Finance Unit.

Duration and location

The position is full-time and situated in IMS’ headquarters in Copenhagen. As our Financial Controller you will be expected to travel frequently to the MENA region.
