United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: UK & PHILIPPINES | Microfinance poverty alleviation org. seeks accountant | 4 Weeks | Oct-Jan

Organization: Accounting for International Development
Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Closing date: 12 Nov 2014

Whilst the decline of poverty in the Philippines has been slow, over 25% of the population still live below the poverty line – which means approximately 25 million people struggling to survive. Our partner is on a mission is to end poverty in the Philippines by using microfinance, which they are proud to separate themselves from other organisations that generate profits through microfinance programmes. They pride themselves on its determined mission to fight poverty, promote ethical social inclusion and improving the quality of life for communities, without generating a profit for themselves.

Our partner identifies itself as a ‘membership organisation’, whereby the beneficiaries of its loans become part of a network which works together and strengthens the community. They partner with the local government, church and respected members of the community to identify people in need, who receive livelihood loans to aid their small businesses. They will only give loans to people who are committed to putting it towards generating their own income and feeding themselves and their families, to encourage empowerment and sustainability.

You will be the first AfID volunteer with this partner, and as such your role will be akin to undertaking a general assessment of their financial processes and controls, identifying any weaknesses and recommending and implementing any changes which you deem necessary. The finance manager would like you to help design a system to effectively monitor the loans they are giving, and help them manage their receivables. They must meet certain government requirements when reporting, which they would also like your help with. They are using Excel at the moment, so you could help them make the most of the software, but also deliver training to more junior members of staff. At the moment, the vast majority of the funding comes from the founder and his family. He would like your advice on the future prospects of the organisation, and advice on how it can become more sustainable without using so much of his personal donations. He would also like to build a micro-insurance aspect to the organisation, and would like everything to be in order before he does that.

There is a Christian ethos behind our partner organisation, but they recognise that faith is not for everyone and as such it will have no bearings upon the professional relationship that our volunteers will share with the organisation.
