King’s has been working in partnership with educational institutions, healthcare providers, governmental and regulatory bodies in Somaliland since 2000. Working closely with the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET), volunteers from King’s Health Partners are building capacity in the Somaliland healthcare system by delivering training and support to educators and clinicians. Since January 2013, King's and MedicineAfrica have received funding from THET to scale up our distance learning programme in Somaliland. This includes plans to expand existing programmes into new cadres including, nurses, midwives and public health students in Somaliland.
The post holder will work closely with the King’s THET Somaliland Partnership (KTSP) Clinical Lead to ensure the smooth running of the programme, and support volunteers to deliver an ambitious programme of distance learning and trips over the coming months. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an interest in global health or international development to get involved in a pioneering international health partnership which is reaching people in one of the world’s most isolated regions. This is a fixed term position to March 2015 with extension subject to future funding.
The post holder will provide comprehensive administrative, coordination and educational support to King’s THET Somaliland Partnership-MedicineAfrica (KTSP-MA) project.
- Ensure the smooth running of the MedicineAfrica programme, including the day-to-day management of the project.
- Coordinate all teaching, mentoring and clinical support activity from the UK and delivery of the KTSP-MA project teaching timetable.
- Coordination of and regular liaison with volunteer teachers and mentors; this includes attending and/or leading tutor inductions, volunteer meetings and trip planning and de-brief meetings.
- Maintain close relationships with project funders, and producing accurate quarterly narrative and financial reports on the progress of the project.
- Oversee internal and external communications for the project including production of a newsletter and maintaining the website.
- Coordinate and support students and volunteers to deliver quality monitoring and evaluation of the project.
- Act as the first point of contact for volunteers, students, partners and the public in the UK and Somaliland, and take appropriate action.
- Support the Somaliland volunteer coordination team to play an active role in the partnership, ensuring open lines of communication between UK and Somaliland partners.
- Play an active part within the KTSP-MA team and wider network of volunteer clinicians across King’s College London and King’s Health Partners
- Support of the development of novel teaching initiates within the KTSP-MA project
- Support research activities undertaken by KTSP-MA staff and volunteers
- To ensure that the administrative systems to support the project are developed and maintained
- Research and develop funding proposals to ensure the sustainability of the partnership.
The project is based at King’s College Hospital with the option of occasional travel to Somaliland.
Fixed term contract until the end of March 2015. Extension is subject to future funding.
